A Short History of the Fabergé Name

The name Fabergé is synonymous with unparalleled craftsmanship, luxury, and historical significance. Founded in 1842 by Gustav Fabergé in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the House of Fabergé became world-renowned under the leadership of his son, Peter Carl Fabergé. It was Peter Carl who lifted the brand to legendary status, earning the patronage of the Russian Imperial family and aristocracy.

The Fabergé name is perhaps most famously associated with the exquisite Imperial Easter eggs, each a masterpiece of artistry and engineering, commissioned by Tsar Alexander III and later, Tsar Nicholas II, as gifts for their wives. These eggs often contained hidden surprises like miniature portraits or mechanical wonders, and each egg was unique, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the Romanov era.

Beyond the Imperial eggs, Fabergé’s workshops produced a wide range of luxury items, including jewellery, objets d’art, and silverware, all distinguished by their intricate detail and the use of precious materials. Fabergé craftsmen were masters of techniques such as enamelling and gem-setting, creating pieces that were as durable as they were beautiful.

The fall of the Russian Empire in 1917 brought an end to the original House of Fabergé. However, the Fabergé name continued to live on, revered by collectors and connoisseurs around the world. Today, Fabergé pieces are highly sought after, not just for their aesthetic beauty but also for their historical and cultural significance.

Understanding the Difficulties in Selling Fabergé Jewellery

    Emotional Attachment

Fabergé jewellery often carries great sentimental value, having been passed down through generations as cherished family heirlooms. Each piece is a link to the past, representing wealth, personal history, and family legacy.

The decision to sell can be emotionally challenging, like you’re parting with a piece of your own identity. This emotional weight is exacerbated further by the fear of not receiving a valuation that truly reflects the piece’s value.

    Finding the Right Buyer

The market for Fabergé jewellery is highly specialised. These items appeal to a niche group of collectors and connoisseurs who understand their true value.

Unfortunately, not every buyer or marketplace possesses the knowledge or appreciation necessary to recognise the full worth of Fabergé pieces. The risk of undervaluation is significant, particularly when dealing with auction houses that may not have the expertise to assess such rare items accurately or may group them with less distinguished pieces in a broader category. This can lead to disappointing outcomes and a sale price that does not reflect the true market value of the item.

    Complexity and Hassle

The process of selling valuable items like Fabergé jewellery can be daunting and time-consuming. From obtaining a professional valuation to the various steps involved in the sale, sellers often find themselves overwhelmed by the complexity of the process. This can include dealing with extensive paperwork, insurance considerations, and logistical challenges, especially when items need to be transported or handled with extreme care.

More importantly, auction houses and other intermediaries typically charge substantial fees and commissions, which can significantly reduce the seller’s net profit. The combination of these factors makes the sale of Fabergé jewellery a potentially taxing and stressful endeavour.

Although they claim on their website to offer better prices than those achievable at auction, I was offered less than half the scrap value for multiple silverware items. I was told that although a 4 piece silver tea set was in good condition, it had no real saleable value as “people don’t really want to buy silver tea sets”. I was also told that I would have to subtract the weight of 3 bakelite handles, and that this would be 500 grams. When I took the handle off a damaged teapot I was sending for scrap, it weighed 48 grams. So a certain amount of inflation was going on there! When I said that I was not prepared to accept the offer, I was asked “Well what are you going to do with it then?” It felt like I was being pressured to sell at the very low offer. I politely declined. Today, I scrapped a damaged silver teapot and 2 small jugs (970g) for more than half the offer made by Burlington’s, and the tea set (2kg) will go to auction.

Craig visited my home a short while ago, to value some jewellery and provided some excellent advice. Craig presented a thorough valuation all while, maintaining a no-pressure approach. The valuation was fair, and Craig came across as a genuinely kind and courteous person. I would thoroughly recommend Burlingtons Ltd, to anyone looking for a professional and a trustworthy valuation.
