Few names in luxury watches rival Patek Philippe. Founded in 1838, this Swiss brand is celebrated for its craftsmanship. More than a brand, Patek Philippe has shaped watchmaking for nearly two centuries, with a legacy of excellence and innovation.

The Evolution of Patek Philippe

  • 1839: Antoine Norbert de Patek partners with François Czapek to establish Patek, Czapek & Cie, a precursor to Patek Philippe.
  • Mid-1840s: Jean Adrien Philippe makes waves with his keyless winding and hand-setting system, attracting recognition from figures like Queen Victoria.
  • 1851: Patek and Philippe join forces to form Patek, Philippe & Ce- Fabricants à Genève. The duo continues to innovate, earning patents for advancements such as a precision regulator and perpetual calendar mechanisms for pocket watches.
  • 1868: Patek Philippe creates the first Swiss wristwatch, made specially for Countess Koscowicz.
  • 1910-1925: The company pioneers multiple watchmaking milestones, including the creation of the first complicated ladies’ wristwatch with a five-minute repeater and the first wristwatch with a perpetual calendar.
  • 1932: Amidst the Great Depression, brothers Jean and Charles Henri Stern invest in Patek Philippe. The same year witnesses the launch of the iconic Calatrava; a watch so revered that it remains part of the Patek Philippe collection today.
  • 1958-1993: Henri Stern and later his son, Philippe Stern, assume the presidency of Patek Philippe. Key developments during this period include the introduction of Patek’s first annual calendar in 1996.
  • 2001: The Patek Philippe Museum, housing over five centuries of watchmaking history, is established.
  • 21st Century: Under Philippe Stern’s leadership, Patek Philippe continues to innovate with creations like the 10-Day Tourbillon, and the Annual Calendar, featuring a revolutionary new silicon-based material.
  • 2009-Present: Thierry Stern assumes the presidency and oversees developments like the launch of the Oscillomax ensemble and a refreshed focus on ladies’ watches, leading to introductions such as the Ladies First Chronograph and the Ladies First Minute Repeater.
